B Various Datasets, in base R, used in this book

  • Nile: Measurements of the annual flow of the river Nile at Aswan (formerly ‘Assuan’), 1871-1970, in 10^8 m^3, “with apparent changepoint near 1898” (Cobb(1978), Table 1, p.249).

  • lynx: Annual numbers of lynx trappings for 1821-1934 in Canada. Taken from Brockwell & Davis (1991), this appears to be the series considered by Campbell & Walker (1977).

  • mtcars: The data was extracted from the 1974 Motor Trend US magazine, and comprises fuel consumption and 10 aspects of automobile design and performance for 32 automobiles (1973-74 models).

  • sunspot.month: Monthly numbers of sunspots, as from the World Data Center, aka SIDC. This is the version of the data that will occasionally be updated when new counts become available.

  • nhtemp: The mean annual temperature in degrees Fahrenheit in New Haven, Connecticut, from 1912 to 1971.

  • airquality: Daily air quality measurements in New York, May to September 1973.

  • JohnsonJohnson: Quarterly earnings (dollars) per Johnson & Johnson share 1960-80.

  • iris: This famous (Fisher’s or Anderson’s) iris data set gives the measurements in centimeters of the variables sepal length and width and petal length and width, respectively, for 50 flowers from each of 3

  • attitude: From a survey of the clerical employees of a large financial organization, the data are aggregated from the questionnaires of the approximately 35 employees for each of 30 (randomly selected) departments. The numbers give the percent proportion of favourable responses to seven questions in each department.

  • longley: A macroeconomic data set which provides a well-known example for a highly collinear regression.

  • USArrests: This data set contains statistics, in arrests per 100,000 residents for assault, murder, and rape in each of the 50 US states in 1973. Also given is the percent of the population living in urban areas.

  • state.x77: Data sets related to the 50 states of the United States of America.
